Cleaners Bermondsey Health and Safety Policy
Cleaners Bermondsey is committed to providing safe and healthy working conditions for all employees, contractors, clients, visitors and members of the public who may be affected by our cleaning activities. This Health and Safety policy sets out our approach to managing risks associated with professional cleaning services and maintaining a culture of safety and responsibility in every location where we operate.
Policy Aims and Scope
This policy applies to all cleaning operatives, supervisors, managers and subcontractors engaged by Cleaners Bermondsey, whether they work in residential premises, commercial offices, retail spaces or communal areas. Our aims are to prevent injury and ill health, comply with applicable health and safety legislation and continually improve our safety performance through regular review and training.
Health and safety responsibilities are integrated into planning, delivering and monitoring all cleaning services, including routine, deep and specialist cleaning tasks. Everyone working for or on behalf of Cleaners Bermondsey is required to follow this policy and any associated procedures and guidance.
Management Responsibilities
Senior management is responsible for providing effective leadership on health and safety and ensuring adequate resources are made available. This includes providing appropriate training, safe equipment, suitable cleaning products, personal protective equipment and clear guidance for all staff.
Management will carry out and regularly review risk assessments for typical cleaning tasks, update safe working procedures where necessary and monitor compliance through supervision and periodic inspections. Where issues are identified, corrective actions will be implemented promptly to reduce risks to an acceptable level.
Employee Responsibilities
All employees share a responsibility to work safely and to protect the health and safety of themselves, colleagues, clients and members of the public. Cleaners must follow training, instructions and risk assessments, use equipment correctly and wear personal protective equipment as directed.
Employees must report accidents, incidents, near misses, hazards, faulty equipment or unsafe practices to their supervisor or manager without delay. No employee should undertake work for which they have not been trained or which they believe to be unsafe. Everyone is expected to co-operate fully in any investigation or review related to health and safety.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Cleaners Bermondsey carries out risk assessments for common cleaning activities such as vacuuming, mopping, use of chemicals, high-level dusting, handling of waste, cleaning of sanitary areas and work in shared or busy environments. Site-specific risks, such as restricted access, stairs, public footfall or unique surfaces and fixtures, are identified and controlled wherever reasonably practicable.
Safe systems of work are developed based on these assessments and communicated to staff through training and written instructions. These cover safe handling and storage of cleaning products, correct dilution and application of solutions, equipment use, manual handling techniques, electrical safety, lone working arrangements and emergency procedures.
Chemical Safety and COSHH
Many cleaning tasks involve the use of chemical products. Cleaners Bermondsey selects and uses cleaning agents in line with manufacturer instructions and relevant control of substances hazardous to health requirements. Safety data sheets are obtained and maintained for all relevant substances, and COSHH assessments are completed to identify hazards and necessary control measures.
Staff receive training on safe use, dilution, application, storage and disposal of cleaning chemicals, as well as on the potential health effects of misuse or accidental exposure. Chemicals are stored securely, clearly labelled and kept out of reach of unauthorised persons, especially in residential or public settings.
Manual Handling and Equipment Safety
Cleaning work can involve lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling equipment or materials. Cleaners Bermondsey trains staff in safe manual handling techniques to reduce the risk of musculoskeletal injuries. Wherever possible, handling risks are minimised by using trolleys, carts and lightweight, ergonomically designed equipment.
All electrical and mechanical cleaning equipment, including vacuum cleaners, floor machines and other appliances, is selected for safety, inspected regularly and maintained in good working order. Staff are instructed never to use damaged equipment, to report defects immediately and to follow isolation procedures where required.
Personal Protective Equipment
Where risks cannot be adequately controlled by other means, appropriate personal protective equipment is provided. This may include gloves, eye protection, masks or respirators, protective clothing and non-slip footwear, depending on the task and environment.
Employees must use PPE as instructed, keep it in good condition and report any damage or loss at once. Cleaners Bermondsey will replace worn or damaged PPE promptly and ensure it is suitable for the individual and the specific task.
Accidents, Incidents and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, incidents and near misses must be reported promptly to enable investigation and to prevent recurrence. Details are recorded and, where necessary, corrective measures or additional training are implemented. Serious incidents are escalated to management for detailed review.
Emergency arrangements, including fire safety procedures, first aid provisions and spill response, are communicated to staff for each site. Cleaning operatives must familiarise themselves with exits, assembly points and any client-specific emergency rules before starting work.
Training, Information and Supervision
Health and safety training is an integral part of the induction process for new staff and is refreshed at regular intervals or when work methods, equipment or legislation change. Training includes safe work practices, chemical safety, manual handling, use of PPE, emergency procedures and incident reporting.
Supervisors and managers provide ongoing guidance and monitoring to ensure that safe working practices are maintained. Additional training is provided where specialist cleaning tasks are undertaken or new risks are identified in our service areas.
Consultation, Communication and Review
Cleaners Bermondsey encourages open communication on health and safety matters. Employees are invited to raise concerns, offer suggestions for improvement and participate in discussions about safe working practices. Feedback from staff, clients and incident investigations is taken into account when updating procedures.
This Health and Safety policy is reviewed regularly and whenever there are significant changes to our operations, equipment, cleaning products or relevant legislation. Updated versions are communicated to all staff to ensure continued understanding and compliance.
By following this Health and Safety policy, Cleaners Bermondsey aims to provide reliable, professional cleaning services while protecting the wellbeing of everyone involved in or affected by our work.
